This year, the biggest development in my school career was switching out of Advertising, a superficial profession charged with deceit, into a more sincere major like EWM: editing, writing, and media. I don’t know how I didn’t think about it before.
Right out of high school, I thought Communications was the coolest major because you got to express your ideas to a mass audience. And my ideas are the most important, right? Still, I enjoyed my Advertising class; we got to dissect tons of commercials on what methods are most effective in telling lies.
‘Nuff of that, though, I’m in a better place now. I still have like half my credits to go til I graduate. Yay long-term undergraduate studies.

Oh yeah, I didn’t mention I’m in Miami. Bro grabs for everyone. On the way down, Joel turned me on to some hip-hop releases I missed this year. The hazy and blunt wrapped Clams Casino-produced mixtape by A$AP Rocky was included as well as Curren$y’s 4/20 release Covert Coup, which is loaded with instrumentals by legendary beatmaker The Alchemist. Money signs errwhere.
In between taking care of Puppy, bro-ing out, and general lazy-ing around, I’m working on those recaps from this year. I’ll post them as they come along.
Beard update: it was my little cousin’s 10th birthday on Saturday and, in an effort to not scare and/or influence the young’un, I made a significant trim on the facial hair. It’s a good thing hair grows back, hopefully in time to keep me warm from the Tally winter months.
Should Portfolios Replace Placement Tests?
Why haven’t comprehensive student portfolios replaced standardized exams? A portfolio, a collection of meaningful work chosen by the student, is a more accurate representation of his or her abilities. How can college institutions rely on a test score to determine an applicant’s qualifications? It’s numb to dwindle someone’s long-running efforts down to a number. This mirrors what I feel about music reviewing blogs/sites and how they accept an artist’s material, process it, and spit out a fraction, a number of stars out of five, or – worse yet – a decimal ranking. As if!
